The
verses from Bil'am's prophecy that talks about the End of Days:
כד וְצִים מִיַּד כִּתִּים, וְעִנּוּ אַשּׁוּר וְעִנּוּ-עֵבֶר; וְגַם-הוּא, עֲדֵי אֹבֵד. | 24 But ships shall come from the coast of Kittim, and they shall afflict Asshur, and shall afflict Eber, and he also shall come to destruction. |
Just because it says "ships" doesn't preclude airplanes.
Kittim is identified as Rome by most commentators.
The Pope is the head of Rome. And wherever he goes, as the Avi Avot Hatum'a that he is, he afflicts everyone he comes in contact with.
Alternatively,
he visited Ur (aka Ur Kasdim), which is the birthplace of Avraham Avinu, also known as Avraham Ha'Ivri (same root as Ever). And ancient Ur, where he visited, is also west of the Euphrates.
וְגַם-הוּא, עֲדֵי אֹבֵד - And he also - i.e. the Pope and all of Malchut Edom - will come to destruction.
Alternatively, as
the Vilna Ga'on says, וגם refers to Gog, and the Pope's original name is BerGOGlio.
May this be sign for good things to come.

I wondered why from out of the blue the P comes to the ME?
AMEN!
I saw your comments about the Pope's visit to Iraq on Adam Berkowitz's website. Some very impressive thoughts. But does not the Targum Yonatan say that the "great ships" or the Navy or the Merchant Navy come from the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire, Constantinople? It is one of those examples where the Targum actually mentions the name of a city 300 years before it even existed! Asking for a clarification
Thank you, R' Dov.
Actually, the Targum Yonatan says that the "ships" come from Italy, but that legions from Constantinople join them.
Note that the Targum Yerushalmi doesn't mention Constantinople. But even if we are Goress it, it could just be a metaphor for all of Yishmael - as the Targum Yonatan seems to imply. And plenty of people from Yishmael joined the Pope on his journey in Iraq.
