Tisha B'Av Video

Just got this email from my synagogue saying:

There will be a special video presentation entitled: “Finding Your Voice: How to Speak the Language of the Geulah”, featuring HaRav Mattisyahu Salomon and Rabbi Yissocher Frand.

The video is the annual excellent video from the Chafetz Chaim Heritage Foundation.

Interesting that they chose this year to talk about the "Language of the Geulah".

Dr. Miriam Adahan on the Matzav

via Lazer Brody

  • Imagine that you live in Israel, which has suffered 25,500 known terror attacks just since 2000, including 6000 rockets just on your small section of Gush Katif, and instead of attacking the Arab enemy, the government attacks you.

  • Imagine that your teenage children are arrested for handing out orange ribbons on street corners and when you see the police choking them and bashing them with brass knuckles and you come to their aid, you, too, are arrested and charged with harming the police officers who arrested you.

  • Imagine that you and your friends come to Kfar Maimon to peacefully protest this outrage and that the government sends 20,000 soldiers and police (the same number President Bush sent to invade Iraq) to encircle the area with barbed wire, creating a virtual prison camp.

  • Imagine that it is August 1, 2005 and you are to be evicted from your home on August 15 and you have no idea where to go.

  • Imagine that you’ve been told that you will be allowed to take enough possessions out of your home to fill two small containers and that the rest must be left behind.

  • Imagine that you live in a beautiful eight-room home of your dreams with five bathrooms and that you will, at best, be given a cramped caravan which leaks in the winter rains and is sweltering in the summer.

  • Imagine trying to decide between your piano and your washing machine, between your books and the beds, between your sofa and your dining room table between your clothing and your photo albums.

  • Imagine that you discuss with your neighbors whether you will lock yourself in your home and make the arresting officers bash the door down, in which case you will forfeit all government compensation or walk silently to the bus which will take you to a detention center, or be dragged out of your home as a way of passively protesting this atrocity.

  • Imagine that you discuss with your spouse whether the children should have to see you being dragged out of the only home they have ever known or if it is better to have them sent away.

  • Imagine that your son/husband/neighbor is an army officer or policeman and it is their duty to drag you to the waiting buses.

  • Imagine that the Israeli press ignores your plight, except to refer to you and your neighbors as fanatical hooligans who have stolen the land you live on.

  • Imagine that you have lived in a community for 10, 20, 30 years, have been productive and independent and that you will soon be unemployed, a burden on the state, a humiliated and broken welfare recipient.

  • Imagine that you walk around your precious community, knowing that your home, synagogue, mikvah, community center, schools and health centers will be soon be bulldozed into oblivion.

  • Imagine having to go from a home with a huge backyard, filled with flowers and fruit trees to some cramped apartment in a strange city.

  • Imagine having to leave your children and grandchildren who could easily run next door to visit you and whom you will now see only rarely.

  • Imagine that the government is spending $7 billion dollars to deport you and your neighbors, forfeiting the $2 billion a year earned by the Gush Katif population and that the money for this expulsion plan was taken by slashing pensions for the elderly, closing schools and hospitals, reducing health services, reducing the sick and the handicapped to begging, sending 37,000 abused children were sent back to abusive homes since there was no money to keep them in state dormitories, canceling summer programs for children - and then you are blamed for all this pain.

  • Imagine that well known rabbis, teachers and community leaders suddenly disappear and that you are told that they are being held in prison indefinitely and being treated in a most brutal manner.

  • Imagine 14 year old children arrested and sent to solitary confinement for having insulted a police officer.

  • Imagine that the government declares war on Judaism, closing down radio stations that used to disseminate inspiring words of Torah, closing down religious councils, cutting off support for religious schools and institutions, threatening rabbis who disagree with government policy and firing government workers who protest.

  • Imagine that even before the 25 communities of Gush Katif are destroyed, that the "Peace Now" Organization hands over a list of 120 Jewish settlements in the Shomron to the Israeli Supreme Court to be destroyed, claiming that the land was stolen from the Palestinians (as if there ever was such a people!).

  • Imagine that Hamas has already announced that there will be massive parades throughout Gush Katif celebrating their victory over the Jewish people.

  • Imagine that the whole world will watch as terrorists take over these communities and think that Jews are the stupidest idiots in the world.

NOW IMAGINE THAT YOU HEAR HASHEM HIMSELF SAYING:

  • My beloved people, imagine that this is a test of faith, which I offer you out of love, so that you can know your own greatness.

  • Imagine that I am sifting out the righteous from the evil.

  • Imagine that these experiences are going to develop iron faith and that this is the only thing that will keep you from going insane.

  • Imagine knowing that whatever happens is necessary and ultimately good.

  • Imagine that evil is necessary in order to give you opportunities to develop and demonstrate your spiritual powers – kindness, self-discipline, courage, integrity, gratitude, humility and faith.

  • Imagine that in a world without evil, words like treachery, slander, egotism, arrogance, blackmail or betrayal would have no meaning. Integrity is never painless. Here is your opportunity to develop it.

  • Imagine that I am a Master Puppeteer. Behind the screen on which these events are projected to form what seems like an insane, unjust and terrifying reality, there is another reality. I am cheering for you to make the right choices. I am a loving G-d. Sometimes, you need to imagine this.

Rabbi P. Winston on Matot

Excerpts from Torah.org

But the truth is that, though Tisha b'Av is indeed rooted in the sin of the spies, the other truth is that it is in this week's parshah that the sin was polished to perfection, so-to-speak. And Moshe makes mention of this:

Moshe answered the descendants of Gad and Reuven, "Should your brothers go to war while you live in peace here? Why would you discourage the Israelite nation from crossing into the land which God has given to them? That's exactly what your ancestors did when I sent them from Kadesh-Barnea to scout the land. (Bamidbar 32:6-8)

Had the two-and-a-half tribes of Reuven, Gad, and Menashe settled into the land with the rest of the nation, then the requisite number of 600,000 Jewish males over the age of 20 would have settled the land, and THAT, says the Vilna Gaon, would have neutralized the Sitra Achra for good. It would have been the tikun for the spies, and no Tisha b'Av would have been necessary, except as a holiday to celebrate the arrival of the Final Redemption. Therefore, the Three Weeks are just as much a reminder about that episode as was the original one.

...

Likewise, the tribes of Reuven, Gad, and Menashe must have thought that their intentions were noble and not contradictory to the ultimate plan of the Jewish people. How else could they have approached Moshe Rabbeinu with an idea just after having served a 40-year sentence for having made the same request at the beginning of the journey? They must have thought there was a difference between what they were doing and what the original spies had done.

Indeed, the Leshem explains that in Yemos HaMoshiach, Jerusalem extends to incorporate the very area in which these tribes settled, which is perhaps why the Old City was in the hands of Jordan for so long before being re- taken in the 1967 war by the Israelis. There is an inherent connection, and the two-and-a-half tribes that chose to settle in that area may have tapped into that, believing that they were settling in a portion of Eretz Yisroel.

...

The Three Weeks, in fact, come to tell us what Moshe Rabbeinu tried to tell the tribes of Reuven, Gad, and Menashe in this week's parshah: Get real with the idea of redemption! Involve yourselves in the issues of Geulah Shlaimah. As Mordechai told Esther, "That it is coming, you can be certain. But whether you will ride on its crest or be steamrolled by it is the choice that G-d is putting before you," - before all of us.

We're running out of chances to get this right. Some of us are betting this is the last one.

Mir Yeshiva Goes Orange

Ladaat.net reports:
Mir Yeshiva in Yerushalayim had a 13-minute burst where the students could pick up all-orange merchandise, including hats, shirts, ribbons, stickers, and puzzles. After 13 minutes, all the merchandise was gone.

Update from Tsunami-Foreseeing Rabbi

From Ledavid.com:
Daniel has updated us again in the Hebrew forum about what the Rav mentioned in the starting post said last Shabbat.

He said that the Rav had told them that from Shamayim (שמים, heavens) they revealed to him that the only reason the Geula (גאולה, redemption) is not arriving yet is the lack of unity within the people of Israel. Furthermore, they asked him from Shamayim to talk about the subject of unity in Israel, and he asked for everyone to talk about it.

Daniel wrote that he was afraid to write such things as a Rav talking with Shamayim in this generation, because people might not believe it, because almost no one talks this way in our generation. However, to emphasize who this Rav was and still not identify him by name, he added to what he said before that the Rav "himself learned from a renowned tzadik זצוק"ל known for his wonder making and his future sight", that the renowned Tzadik that was the teacher of the Rav was the renowned Rav Nachmani, known for his accurate future sight.

New Email Address

The author of this blog is now emailable. The address is on the sidebar. Please only email information that you don't feel comfortable posting in a comment. Otherwise, comments are prefered.
Thank you, and I hope everyone has an easy and meaningful fast.

Follow-up to Previous Post

For those interested, here's my translation of the code (please correct me if I made a mistake in the translation):

מצור כתום יבלום מאויי ממשל
"A siege of orange will stop the desires of the government"

The words מצור כתום ("siege of orange") appears once in the Torah at an interval of 1390 letters (spanning many Parshiot and even 2 books of the Torah). That same sequence continues to produce יבלום מאויי ("will stop the desires of"). The word ממשל ("government") crosses the sequence with an interval of 5.

The site where this originated (hidabroot.org) seems to say that this may NOT be disengagement-related for a couple reasons:
  1. The Disengagement is (in their opinion) a done-deal - not what one would term "the desires of the government" - it's already the actions of the government.
  2. A Pasuk that crosses the sequence is from Parshat Vayigash:
ואת העם העביר אתו לערים מקצה גבול מצרים (And as for the people, he removed them city by city, from one end of the border of Egypt) which may hint to the residents of Gush Katif (on the border of Egypt) being moved to other cities.

Hidabroot.org rather says that this is referring to some future evacuation that the government may want to enact (Has Veshalom). I don't know what it's referring to, but I would not rule out its referring to the current Disengagement. It's not a done-deal. Yeshuat Hashem Keheref Ayin.

Hidabroot.org emphasizes that one must be extremely cautious with predicting based on these codes, and with that I agree. This is especially true when the codes can be interpreted in so many different ways that anyone can make up a code to fit it with the way they want to fit it. The only difference here is that Rav Eliyahu against all logic said that the Disengagement won't happen. Tzadik Gozer Vehakadosh Baruch Hu Mekayaim. We'll see what happens.

Disengagement? It Aint Happenin II

I had posted earlier that Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu had said that the Disengagement is not going to happen (from this Arutz Sheva article).

Here's some more info, brought to you by Ani Maamin from Ledavid.com.

Avsha has posted an interesting post about the Hitnantkut (disengagement). First he mentioned an earlier thread dealing with the orange color representing the current resistment movement against the expulsion of Jews (summarized here on Yeranen Yaakov Blog). Then he said:

quoting Avsha:

I have learned during the Shabbat that a renowned Rav with a big community, who is very close to Rav Mordechai Eliyahu had invited all his community to a thanksgiving party and meal on the same day of that the Hitnatkut should begin!

Later the name of the Rav was revealed: Rav David Chai HaCohen, head of the "Orot-HaTorah" instutitions and a Yeshiva head in Bat-Yam, who is very close to Rav Mordechai Eliyahu. Later, he revealed that many say that there is a secret knowledge known only to few, and that knowledge is the reason for the declarations that the Hitnatnkut won't happen.

Also in that thread, a biblical code where the following is found: מצור כתום יבלום מאווי ממשל.

An earlier Hebrew thread brought confirmation to the news that Rav Mordechai Eliyahu claimed that his words about the Hitnatkut not taking place is "a prophecy". The confirmation came from Rav Ezra Scheinberg, head of "Orot-HaAri" Yeshiva in Safad, and was published in the Moria site, an orginazation that was established by Rav Mordechai Eliyahu himself.

Regarding the controversial practice of using Torah Codes to predict future events, the site from where the code information originated discusses that at length.

This Year (5765) is Special

See this for why. In particular, see Section W part 7, and the conclusion.

Also, see Section N part 9, which points out that this week's Haftara about Eliyahu (Zachur Latov) is read, which doesn't happen very often.

Current Ahdut Can Bring the Geula

The current Ahdut of those praying and protesting against the disengagement can bring the Geula, so writes "Avsha" on Ledavid.com.

Excerpts, translated:
What is the Geula that we can do? When a person sees in someone else something missing, and he supplements it, this is exactly like Geula

...

Expecting Geula can only come after actions of Geula.

...

There has never been felt as much brotherly unity as there is today

...

The awakening of all factions of religious Jews against this foolish plan testifies about this - that if they don't fight against this process now, in the future, they will need to fight against processes that are seven-fold worse.

...

[paraphrased] The situation parallels the Megillah story, where Haman told Ahashverosh that the Jews are Mefuzar Umforad (scattered - not united), so Esther knew how to counter that by telling Mordechai, "Go and gather ALL of the Jews" - by being united.

...

Even the secular and leftists are jealous and amazed at this unity which exists in the religious camp today, and it's clear that they didn't expect it.

There's no doubt that life in the religious world won't return to the way it was in the past - the sobering today is great, and the unity will only strengthen and widen because we already know its value.

...

('האספו ואגידה לכם את אשר יקרה אתכם באחרית הימים' (בראשית מ"ט, א'
The rabbis expounded (Bereishit Rabba 98) that Yaakov Avinu commanded them regarding division. He told them, "You should all be 1 gathering...The children of Israel became 1 unit - they prepared themselves for Geula."

Let's hope it's true!

They include former officials such as Labor Foreign Minister Shlomo Ben-Ami, General Security Chief Ami Ayalon, Air Force Commander Gen. Eitan Ben-Eliyahu, IDF Chief of Staff Gen. Rabbis' Urgent Letter

Translation of Ladaat.net article:
In an urgent letter that was distributed today in many synagogues, the former chief rabbis - Harav Hagaon Avraham Shapira Shlit"a and Harav Hagaon, the Rishon Letzion Rav Mordechai Eliyahu Shlit"a - call upon the public to come and join them in the "Engagement March" which will take place this coming Monday. On the letter which was signed by the rabbis Shlit"a, it says:
Unfortunately, the Israeli Government has decided to expel thousands of Israelis - complete families, men, women, and children - from their homes and land, in which they lived for about 3 generations. This decision is against Halacha, justice, and human dignity, which a comparable thing has never been done before. It is incumbant upon all of us to strengthen ourselves with strength to help and encourage [the Gush Katif residents] and to prevent their expulsion. It is not a time to be silent העת לכם אתם לשבת בבתיכם ספונים והבית הזה חרב Is it a time for you yourselves to dwell in your cieled houses, while this house lieth waste? We are all called to be ready, armed to go, for the sake of our mighty brothers, ye mighty in strength, that fulfil His word.
We call upon all our Jewish brothers to join us and to join our mighty brothers in Gush Katif, to remove the siege, to cancel the expulsion, and to raise up families for settlement in the area. We call upon all our brothers to unite, to focus our efforts and to work with all their strength to the success of the project, and it is incumbant upon all of us during these days to focus only on this project to cancel this horrible decree. We should strenghten ourselves with prayer in abundance, and prayer from the depths of the heart, that the gates of Heaven should be split open, and that Hashem should cancel from us all evil decrees. עת צרה היא ליעקב וממנה ניוושע and it is a time of trouble unto Jacob, but out of it shall we be saved. We call upon the public to say Tehillim chapter 121 after every prayer, until the decree is nullified.
חזק ונתחזק בעד עמנו ובעד ערי אלוקינו Be of good courage, and let us prove strong for our people, and for the cities of our G-d

A Ladaat.net reporter notes that Admorim and additional rabbis are expected to provide their opinion as דעת תורה to join in the "Engagement March".

Prayer Against Disengagement

Where else, but the Kotel? Rav Mordechai Eliyahu and Rav Avraham Shapira were there, along with over 10,000 others, including many Hareidim. Many Knesset members joined in as well.

Also, R' Lazer Brody is one who advocates prayer over protests.

Meanwhile, Jonathan Rosenblum is getting worried over disengagement fallout. An interesting article - I don't know if he's right or not - but worth reading.

Haftarah Repeats Itself

Did anyone notice how this week's (Parshat Hukat) Haftarah had a lot of similarities to events happening today?

Ammon: You took our land!

Yiftah: No we didn't! Hashem gave it to us in battle, a defensive one at that.

Boneh Yerushalayim

Rachak posted on an email that was written by a well-known shul-rabbi in Chicago. It is for a global effort in having proper intent when saying Boneh Yerushalayim in one's Tefilla. It was meant for Rosh Hodesh, but it's never too late. Any day (week, month, etc.) would be a good time to start this.

Here's the email:
A MESSAGE FROM RABBI ZEV M SHANDALOV IN CHICAGO...

We all receive emails every day asking us to take action on an issue; jokes to send around; requests to daven for someone and stocks in which to invest.

Although this IS an email asking for action...GLOBAL action...it is different in that it has the potential to bring about a significant change for Jews everywhere.

On Friday, July 8, 2005, Jews all over the world will celebrate the second day of Rosh Chodesh Tammuz, being the FIRST day of this new month. It is a tragic fact that the month of Tammuz was the beginning of the end for the Bet HaMikdash in Yerushalayim, almost 2000 years ago. The walls of the city were breached and this ultimately led to the destruction of the Bet HaMikdash (Sheyibaneh Bimhera B'yamenu)

As we enter this month of Tammuz, there is a small, but significant act we can do that MAY help to bring about a change in the Heavenly Court. On that day, the First day of Tammuz, let everyone who reads this email resolve to say one particular Bracha with perfect "kavana," (intent).

The Bracha that I refer to is "Boneh Yerushalyim" in Shemona Esray. As you recite that paragraph (beginning with the words "V'lirushalayim Ircha B'rachamim Tashuv...") concentrate as strongly as possible and PICTURE the complete re-building of the Bet HaMikdash! Daven as hard as possible for this to occur.

IMAGINE! Imagine thousands of Jews all over the world concentrating on one day over one particular Bracha for the re-building of Yerushalyim! Imagine how that can show Hashem that we really are tired of this LONG Golus (exile). Imagine spending Tish'a B'Av in Yerushalyim THIS YEAR as involved in the greatest change ever to happen for the Jewish people in nearly 2000 years!

Is it a BIG dream? Of course it is. But if you do not think it is a REALISTIC dream....think again. Think of the power that ONE Tefilla potentially may have.

I urge you to forward this email to everyone on your email lists and ask THEM to do the same.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Rabbi Zev M Shandalov

I just want to add that another intent one should have when saying this blessing is that Mashiah Ben Yosef should not die at the hands of Aramilus Harasha.

May Yerushalayim be rebuilt speedily in our days. Amen.

Orange = Tola'at Shani

Someone at Ledavid.com says that the Tola'at Shani, used in the Mishkan and Bigdei Kehuna was the color orange. Shani was also the color of the thread that Rahav tied on her window so the Israelite army would save her and her family. Immediately following this, the spies came to Yehoshua and said:
וַיֹּאמְרוּ, אֶל-יְהוֹשֻׁעַ, כִּי-נָתַן יְהוָה בְּיָדֵנוּ, אֶת-כָּל-הָאָרֶץ; וְגַם-נָמֹגוּ כָּל-יֹשְׁבֵי הָאָרֶץ, מִפָּנֵינוּ.
Based on this, the poster said that this is the reason why orange was chosen as the color that symbolizes the entirety of the Land of Israel.

I
questioned that based on this Wikipedia entry, which seems to indicate that Shani is really red.

The poster
replied that an Israeli researcher found out that Shani is really orange based on this article.

He
also says that R' Hayim Vital, in Sha'ar Hakavanot, says that Tola'at Shani is red[dish], but represents the Hesed of Gevurah. The poster surmises that yellow is Hesed and red is Gevurah, so the combination is Hesed of Gevurah.

Gog Umagog Is Over 3

I mentioned some time ago R' Lazer Brody's rebbe - the Melitzer Rebbe - saying that Gog Umagog already happened during the Holocaust. I questioned that assertion based on some of the Pesukim.

It turns out that there's a whole discussion about it over at Ledavid.com.

Check it out.

Tehillim to Say from Rav Eliyahu

Regarding praying for the undoing of the disengagement:

Last week, Rav Mordechai Eliyahu said to say chapters 120-124, 130, and 140.

Now, he says we should say the verses that spell out גוש קטיף לעד (which means "Gush Katif forever"). Preferably, one should use the Hida's Tehillim (a special Tehillim that has verses in the order of the Alef Bet) to spell it out. If one doesn't have the Hida's Tehillim, one should say the verses of chapter 119 to spell it out.

A Tale of 2 Explosions

Arutz Sheva reports:

Kassam Missile Explodes on Nursery School in Gush Katif. No Injuries 09:59 Jul 04, '05 / 27 Sivan 5765
(IsraelNN.com) Miracle in Gush Katif: A Kassam missile slammed into the roof of a nursery school late last night in the town of Ganei Tal in Gush Katif. Children living in nearby homes, many who attend the school, were awakened by the explosion, but were unharmed.Residents of Ganei Tal added a prayer for thanksgiving to their regular morning prayers. The IDF has not responded to the attack and is not expected to do so.

Meanwhile, in the USA, we were hearing explosions for a good part of the night, and probably weren't woken by them. If we were, we likely went straight back to sleep.

This is just a reminder to those of us stuck in the US Galut: when you hear those fireworks, think about the explosions that are of real concern - like the one that exploded over a nursery school in Gush Katif - and pray for those who may not have gone back to sleep that night.

New Geula Version of Events

A poster on Ledavid.com by the name of Daniel quotes an unnamed Kabbalist (the one who predicted the Tsunami) second-hand, but vouches for its authenticity. The unnamed Kabbalist said the following:
  • The disengagement will take place. (The crowd was stunned at this statement since it contradicts others' statements to the contrary (like Rav Mordechai Eliyahu's prediction). He then said that it wasn't as a prophecy - just his opinion).
  • The next stage after the disengagement will be the fight over whether to hand over Jerusalem to the Arabs. This will be the final selection process. He said that whoever advocates handing over any part of Jerusalem "has no Jewish soul".
  • After this process, the Geula begins. We will not need a Parah Adumah since the water on Har Habayit (mentioned here) will either rise or otherwise come on us and purify us all. (Sounds like this [scroll down to the end]). At that point Mashiah will come.

Let's hope the first part is wrong or that our Tefilot can nullify the evil decree. Let's do Teshuva so the second stage isn't so dramatic. And finally, let the third part come Bimhera Beyamenu.

Update: See the comments for an explanation of the purifying water by R' Mordechai Eliyahu.
