The Vilna Gaon's 28 "Times" Redux

An idea that I first saw mentioned by Rav Fish years ago, but last year became popular on other sites (for example, Daf Yomi Review) was the Vilna Gaon's idea that the 28 "Times" in Kohelet chapter 3 refer to the 28 equal eras in world history.  To be more specific, we divide the 6000 years of world history into 28 parts, which shows that an era equals 214.285714286 years.  If you multiply that number by 27, you get 5785.71428571.  This got people excited last year that we were entering a new era near the end of 5785.

However, this assumes a 0-based calculation of history where the 6000 years ends on Rosh Hashana of the year 6000.  On the other hand, the 1-based calculation of history, where the 6000 years ends on Rosh Hashana of the year 6001, makes more sense to me, as there was never a year 0.  (I also acknowledge the possibility of a 2-based calculation of history since Adam was created on Rosh Hashana of Year 2, but let's stick to the 1-based version right now.)

So, assuming a 1-based calculation of history, the eras would be divided like this:

26וְעֵת לִשְׂנֹאand a time to hate5358.1 - 5572.4
27עֵת מִלְחָמָהa time for war5572.4 - 5786.7
28וְעֵת שָׁלוֹםand a time for peace5786.7 - 6001

It's really quite remarkable how these years correspond to the era names.  For example, the era of עת להרוג contains the death of Adam Harishon.  The era of עת לבנות contains the rebuilding of the world after the Flood.  עת שחוק contains the birth of Yitzhak.  עת כנוס אבנים is when the first Beit Hamikdash was built.  עת לרחק מחבק is when it was destroyed.  עת לאבד was when the second Beit Hamikdash was destroyed.  עת לשמור is when Ribbi Yehuda Hanasi wrote down Torah Shebe'al Peh to preserve it. עת מלחמה started around the time of Napolean's conquest and included many wars, including world wars.  There are many more correlations.

Getting back to our "era", though, it seems that we can find a date when the transition from עת מלחמה to עת שלום occurred.  The chart has 5786.7 as the time, but if we want to be more precise, it should be 5786.71428571.  Taking the ".71428571" decimal and multiplying it by the number of days in 5786 (which is 354), we get about 253 days.  Adding 253 days to Rosh Hashana, 5786 (Sep. 23rd, 2025), that takes us to June 3rd, 2026 (Sivan 18, 5786).

So, I checked the news for June 3rd, 2026 and found it very interesting:
  • Iran sent ballistic missiles to Bahrain and caused damage to a US base
  • President Trump, despite this, wants to continue talking to Iran
  • Talks in the US for Israel to make peace with Lebanon
  • In the meantime, Israel killed about 20 Hezbollah fighters there
This news is giving me a sense of war and peace, war and peace בערבוביא (all mixed together).  This is the exact day that "A time for war" is transitioning to "A time for peace"!

But I don't think that we should limit this to the actual day of June 3rd.  I would say that this entire time period since the ceasefire in Iran (during the last days of Pesah) gives me that same feeling.  So this war and peace בערבוביא may actually be due to Hashem's master plan of transitioning to a Time of Peace.

May the Time of Peace in its full strength occur speedily in our days, Amen.
