Thoughts on Notre Dame
- 775 years ago (according to most Jewish sources or 777 years ago according to others), 20 or 24 cartloads of Talmud were burnt about 2 blocks and a bridge away from the Norte Dame.
- The Maharam of Rotenberg, who witnessed this tragedy, wrote:
- The Magen Avraham notes that when that occurred, the Torah was given over to the Kelipot and he prayed that Hashem should return it to us speedily in our days.
- Shibolei Haleket (brought down in the aforementioned Magen Avraham and in Seder Hadorot among other places) notes that from a dream, they asked if this was a heavenly decree and the answer came from Heaven in the form of the words of Targum Onkelos on the namesake of that week's Parasha (Hukat): דא גזירת אוריתא (whose gematria plus the kollel equals that of the secular year that this occurred, incidentally) - meaning "This is a decree from Heaven".
- This fire occurred on a Monday where the morning Torah reading includes reading about the goat that is to be sent La'azazel. The Ramban famously explains this as a bribe to the forces of the desert who fight wars, including the nation of Esav, who lives by the sword.
- A verse we read that day says: לְשַׁלַּח אֹתוֹ לַעֲזָאזֵל, הַמִּדְבָּרָה and the words לשלח אתו has the gematria of 775, the number of years since the burning of the Talmud. This could be read as saying that there were 775 years given to Azazel before Hashem's vengeance occurred.
- ולאם מלאם יאמץ - enough said.
- As Dov Bar Leib pointed out, this occurred on the 10th of Nissan, which is when we tied our Korban Pesah to the bedpost in Egypt - a concept bastardized by the adherents of the Notre Dame.
- The 10th of Nissan is also when we read about the sacrifices brought by the prince of the Tribe of Dan. Dan symbolizes Hashem's judgement to take vengeance against those who rise up against Israel (see Bereishit 49:16 and its commentaries).
- It also occurred during their "
HolyTum'ah Week". - The words "Notre Dame" can be read as נוטר דם, which could mean "He Who holds a grudge for the blood" (as in לא תקם ולא תטר) referring to the blood shed in the name of the church throughout the centuries.
- The last verse of Yoel and its commentaries explain that Hashem may accept bail for the nations who stole from the Jewish people throughout history, but He will not wipe their slate clean for the blood they shed (think Crusaders, Inquisitions, blood libels, etc.).

- One final thought: The burning of the Talmud occurred in 5004 (according to most) which is 4 years away from the millennium. 4 years ago, I noted that:
(With Rav Fish's explanation - see here) The Ariza"l takes Shemot 38:28 (וְאֶת-הָאֶלֶף וּשְׁבַע הַמֵּאוֹת, וַחֲמִשָּׁה וְשִׁבְעִים, עָשָׂה וָוִים, לָעַמּוּדִים) and applies the "one thousand" in that verse to the exile of the fifth millennium. He also explains that the sixth millennium (which is the Sod of Vavei Ha'amudim) is mixed with good and evil. The implication is that at the year 775 of the sixth millennium, the good will separate from the evil to make a filtered world.
Perhaps, the 5th and 6th millennia started in earnest in 4004 and 5004 respectively. This is because Rav died in 4003, thereby ending the Tannaic period (רב תנא הוא ופליג). So, exile consisted of 1000 years of pure "evil" (4004-5004) and 775 years of a mixture of good and evil (5004-5779). May the filtered world come speedily in our days, Amen.
עוֹד תִּגְזוֹר לִשְׂרוֹף דָּת אֵשׁ וְחֻקִּים וְלָכֵן אַשְׁרֵי שֶׁיְּשַׁלֶּם לָךְ גְּמוּלָיִךְessentially praying for Hashem to enact His revenge upon those who did this dastardly act.

amen!
Brilliant post, Rabbi Yaak.
Your point about the Torah reading and the Ramban's explanation is particularly eye-opening and hopeful.
(And thanks for linking.)
Thanks for all these insights - very helpful.

I understand "the Torah was given over to the Kelipot" in the Magen Avraham refers to the burning of the Torah mentioned in se'if gimel which deals with fasting on sheini and chamishi. The fast for the burning of the Talmud is yom shishi of Chukat.
Excellent. This proves EVERYTHING is in the TORAH and all we have to do is search. I didn’t have time to spend on this, except to ask Reb Dov for his comment.
Cosmic,
Yes, you are correct. I should have realized it was going on a more general idea of burning the Torah. However, it could apply to this instance too and it's possible that the Magen Avraham intended that as well.
This event is a prelude of the big fire that is going to happen in the world of Edom. We know that the world has to be consumed by fire before olam haba emerges.
And Yishmael knows what to do.
The fact that Edom's head has a hand in the power grid of Venezuela is a significant trigger for the magnitude of future events.
The point with Notre Dame is that it has no protection from above. It will never be reconstructed. It doesn't have any spiritual purpose. At the End of Days there has to be the clean-up. There are some Christian groups understanding that without the power of Judaism, their religion had no meaning.
The hot summer is coming. Notre Dome was just an experiment. How could a stone made building got fire without the human hand? It appears that Tsarfat is at the forefront of Edom's demise. What the half of million Jews are still doing in France? שר
Heard on the radio that there were about another dozen fires of churches in France that week.
Who knew that Rav Mutzafi Shlit"a reads my blog?
Just kidding, but ברוך שכוונתי.
Also, Rav Aviner.
Also Rav Fish.
