MBD, MBY, and Seraya

Who?

You've heard of Mashiah ben David.
You've heard of Mashiah ben Yosef.
But who's Seraya?

I was first introduced to the concept of Seraya a number of years ago by a Rav in town who mentioned him.

The Zohar (see p. 4641) mentions him as a warrior helper of MBY in his battles against our enemies.
He comes from the tribe of Dan. (Also mentioned in Kol Hator.)

On the verse לישועתך קויתי ה׳, the Midrash says:

לפי שהיה אבינו יעקב רואה אותו וסבור כי שהוא מלך המשיח כיון שראה אותו שמת אמר אף זה מת לישועתך קויתי ה׳

Yaakov Avinu saw him [Shimshon] and thought that he was the King Mashiah. Once he saw that he died, he said, "Even he died? I hope for your salvation, Hashem."

The נזר הקדש doesn't like the גירסא of "וסבור כי שהוא מלך המשיח" here, and instead changes it to match the following paragraph in the Midrash by using the words "וסובר בו שגאולה מגעת בימיו", so Yaakov Avinu didn't think that Shimshon was the Mashiah since Mashiah must come from Yehuda. Rather, he thought that Shimshon would be the mighty warrior from the tribe of Dan that would fight until the time of the Geula. However, Yaakov Avinu then saw that Shimshon would die, and therefore said לישועתך קויתי ה׳ - meaning, "I know that the Geula will come via someone from the tribe of Dan. If not from Shimshon, I hope for your salvation, Hashem, through Seraya, who will come from the tribe of Dan during the time of the Geula Sheleima."

There's also a gematria I found in ויספר משה:

ויפל רכבו אחור בגמיטריא וזהו יהיה שריה

Thanks Yaak, I've been looking for more info on Serayah for awhile now beyond the following link.

Also has you or anyone else found any info on another End Times figure called (from what I remember) the Righteous Kohen?

I seem to remember something about how in the end of days (via Zechariah’s vision), the four Klipa - Esau, Ishmael, Amalek and the Erev Rav will come against Israel until they fall into the hands of the four Craftsman - MBD, MBY, Serayah or Eliyahu Hanavi & the Righteous Kohen (whom some say is Shem / Melchizedek).

Neshama

It's been translated as "Seraiah son of Dan" (Chapter 2 Verse 150)

Jesterhead,

Your reference to the 4 craftsmen is found in Sukkah 52b, and it mentions Eliyahu only - not Seraya. Rashi there gives 2 explanations for "Kohen Tzedek": either Shem or Malkitzedek (who according to Midrash are the same person).

Yaak

I see

While I somewhat aware of the others respective roles in the end of days, what exactly is the Kohen Tzedek's role compared to say MBD or Eliyahu Hanavi?

I'm unaware of what his role is, although I could venture a guess, and that is to be the Kohen Gadol at the time that the Beit Hamikdash is rebuilt.

I just noticed that the Eitz Yosef on Ein Yaakov on Sukkah 52b says that the Kohen Tzedek is Ezra, and that he is a reincarnation of Aharon HaKohen.

Now I see why people say that the last redemption parallels the first one.

MBY = Joshua

MBD = Moses, despite being from the line of David via an Ibbur some say.

Eliyahu = Pinchas(?)

Serayah = Shimson, though Tzalyah (via the MysticalPaths link above) appears to be the main Exodus figure from Shevet Dan.

Not sure if Tzalyah is the correct translation as I'm unable to find anything else on him.

Anonymous 7:49 - you're assuming Hushim ben Dan, whose letters spell out Mashiah, is Seraya. Are you saying that Seraya is a gilgul of Hushim?

Anonymous 3:09 - very interesting! I may post about it.

"Seraya, chagor charbakh
Wahashchet jedud oivakh"

Off-the-cuff translation from my off-the-cuff transliteration:

"Seraya, gird your sword
And slaughter the troops of your enemy"

From the poem "Ayumah beHar HaMor" by R' Shalom Shabazi, pre-eminent poet of Yemenite Jewry (lived in Teiman over 300 years ago).

Jusst thought I'd run that by you all....
