Rav Fish on 5778 Being the ץ
Rav Fish has an interesting Hiddush in which we divide 6000 years by the 27 letters of the Alef Bet (22 letters plus 5 final letters). This gives us 222.2222 years per letter. If the world goes from the year 1 until the year 6001, the table for this comes out to this:

Excellent insight! We should observe that one of the Mashiach's names is Tzemach, the Branch, the source of other ramifications.
The tzadi sofit starts in Tamuz 5778. As the month of Tamuz is that of sins, this time has a reversed effect, it becomes the month of right deeds. That entail that it will be a significant time for the Am Yisrael to become a world priesthood, a community of tzadikim, marked by the same tzadi letter.
Moshe was born in the Hebrew year 2368, thus he under the letter kaf that stands for life, growth, and has the value of 20.
The letter tzadi has the value of 90, the difference between the two letters is 70. Thus the number 70 becomes significant from the Moshe's time to that of Mashiach's.
כ is also in the middle of the Seven Doubles. That splits in two the Twelve Simple Letters, on one side is being yod (value of 10, creation), on the other side is lamed (of the value of 30, vigour).
It is Nissan that 7 month from Tishri
July 6, 2019 is 3 Tammuz that year.
Only Eliyahu HaNovi will inform us of what date, day, time and hour that Moshiach will reveal himself. No human being know this information.

There are various ways of doing the calculation.
I'll admit that the simplest way is counting 5778.7 years from Year 1, which would bring you to Tamuz of 5779, as you said.
However, I'm not aware of an opinion that says that the 6000 years are over on Rosh Hashana of the Year 6002, which this calculation would eventually be saying.
Rather, the normative opinion is that the 6000 years are over on Rosh Hashana of the Year 6001, which would make 222.222 years from then this coming Tamuz.
I blame myself for not clarifying this point in the post.
Nevertheless, I could be wrong about this and it could be a year from Tamuz. As you correctly said, Has Veshalom we'd have to wait that long and let's hope Mashiah comes now.

We heard in a lecture on Chanukah 5778 by Rabbi Dov Kook of Tiberius, who said that by Purim the war of Gog and Magog will breakout and that this Purim 5778 will be the last Purim before the revelation of Mashiach.

5778.7777 it's at about 8th-10th of Tamuz 5778 (we calculate from Rosh haShanah 5779 going back about 81 days), the geulah under the tzadi sofit. That makes 21-23 June 2018. The Rosh HaShanah 5779 in on 10-11 Sept. 2018.

If this method has surfaced recently that means we are allowed to make calculations. The time is so short to the coming of geulah that such information is very useful.
In other words, at the End of Days the deep understanding does happen for those few accessing the chaya.
But things are truly in HaShem's hand. The calculations are open doors, it will be up to Eliyahu and Mashiach to walk through. Avi

This means that the 26th multiple ends and we enter the 27th (Tzade) June/early July this year.
Didn’t the Rambam[11] forbid attempts to figure an exact date for the arrival of Moshiach? Yes. However, the Ramban[12] says that the prohibition of the Gemara[13] only applied to earlier generations; now that we are on the eve of redemption, there is no prohibition.

it's 354 days between RH 5778 (9/20/17) and RH 5779 (9/9/18).
We've completed a full 5777 years and are now into 5778. The 26 x 222.222 periods come to en end at 275.333 days from RH 5778, i.e. around 8pm EST 6/21/18 (which is 275.333 days in EY).
